Cameras, Cords & a Computer
The yearlong round-the-world trip I embark on next month is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. As a result, I want to use words, photos, and videos to document my movements over the next 12 or so months. Therefore, a majority of the items that will fill my backpack are technology related:
Computer:
13-Inch MacBook Pro
Cameras:
GoPro Hero4 Silver – This will most often be used to document activities that are water related (scuba diving, snorkeling) or in conditions that may potentially damage my Nikon D-3200 or Canon G7X.
Nikon D-3200 – This will be my primary camera to photograph adventures along with the 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses.
Canon G7X – I just recently purchased the G7X as a way to videotape my day-to-day movements. The G7X will also serve as an alternative to take photographs in situations when I choose not to carry the much larger Nikon D-3200.
Odds & Ends:
iPhone 6 – In a pinch the iPhone 6 can be used to take photos and videos.
Suunto Ambit 2 GPS Watch – I will wear this watch to not only keep track of time but also to track my hikes and other activities along with way. It accompanied me to South America and tracked my 4-day trek along the Lares Trail and Machu Picchu. It quickly connects with satellites and can be used to document distance, elevation, temperature and a multitude of other statistics.
Poweradd Apollo2 10,000mAh Solar Charger – This solar charger will provide supplemental power to my electronics when wall outlets are not accessible. The charger itself can be re-powered by the sun or by wall outlet. I used this charger in South America and it performed well in both sunny and overcast conditions.
Amazon Kindle – Rather than lugging around paperback books from country to country, I will certainly rely on my Amazon Kindle to pass the time on long flights, bus rides, and train journeys.
Seagate 1 TB External Hard Drive – In addition to backing up photographs and videos to a cloud service, I will carry along a 1 TB external hard drive to store my photographs as well.
JOBY GorillaPod Tripod – This small, yet versatile tripod can hold all 3 cameras listed above. It has maneuverable legs that can be wrapped around a multitude of surfaces to provide unique angles or when taking long exposure photographs.
There remain a couple of items I need to purchase prior to my departure:
- International Travel Plug Adapter
- Full-Size Travel Tripod (I may or may not purchase an additional tripod as it is another expense and will add more weight to my backpack)
- I’m sure there are additional items I am forgetting at the present moment
